Make a Difference with your BA Skill Set

In today’s age, Business Analyst has become a key role in an IT or any other Organization. But as a BA he should not be confined to limited skills. Though he is not responsible, then also he should have working knowledge on each and every process that happens in a project life cycle.

It is all about differentiating from others with the advanced skill set which will make an employee irreplaceable in an organization. So as a BA, he should be equipped with the most advanced skills present in the industry. Out of my experience, I have tried to list out all in the form of a diagram being displayed below.

BA Skill Set
If anything can be added to this, let me know your suggestions or thoughts on the same.

Very good article....

Can you clarify few points...?
1. PMO Activities - Always we have a challenge in distinguishing between pure BA activities with Extended (BA) PM activities.... out of your experience could you explain... a BA should get involved in PM activities?

2. Software Testing Knowledge - What is the involvement of BA in Performance and Stress testing & Integration testing?

This chart clearly represents as how does the Software Develpoment Cycle works.
A perfect skeleton of SDLC.
Keep it up..

Good gist of all required BA skills.

The article is very good but I disagree with the software testing knowledge. Some BAs have that skills but this is not BA role skills. For eg interation testing isfor technical roles. I agree VPB that is important to distinguish from BA skills to PM skills.

As I have mentioned in the article, all these knowledge areas are not mandatory for a BA, but if someone knows it then it would be a great advantage for him.

As most of the companies follow a V-Model Testing today, so the Testing Process starts along with the Requirements Documentation Process. So as a BA if we are aware of little bit or basics of Testing then we can validate the high-level Test Strategies, we can help the Business Users to document UAT Test Cases, etc.

Great information that can be used either for check list while on a project or for preparation for BA interview.

Thank you!

In your opinion, what are the minimum skill requirements for a BA?

Abhijit Patro said...

I have highlighted the BA Role at a high-level in my other blog-post:

http://www.businessanalysis.in/2013/05/who-is-business-analyst.html

Minimum Requirement:

1. Understand the Business Problem clearly from the Business User(s).

2. Document the Requirements Clearly.

3. Communicate the same with various Team(s) Dev or QA.

Yes, a Fresh Graduate (B-Tech/BE/MBA) can become a Business Analyst with proper end-to-end Business Analysis Training.

Additionally he should possess some qualities to become a Business Analyst. Please refer to my other blog post on this:

thanks a lot sir for your valuable guidance..But should the BA posses coding skill like CORE JAVA,ADVANCE JAVA,knowledge of iphone technology, android, blackberry.
Sir why big companies like tcs ,accenture,HCL do not hire btech fresher for BA post.

Abhijit Patro said...

Coding Skills are not required for a BA. But -

If he is having basic skill of OOPS Concepts, then it can help in OOAD & UML.

If he is having basic Database Modeling Concepts then it can help to analyze the entities & their relationships.

All these are not mandatory skills for a BA. Having said that, these skills can differentiate yourself in a group of other BAs.

All companies hire Fresh Graduates along with the experienced ones. But varies the entry criteria such as few companies look for fresh IIM graduates.

Hi Abhijith,

I have got a job as a Business Analyst in a reputed company related to Third Party Vendor Reporting.

Before I joining, just wanted to understand clearly what would be the role of a Business Analyst in Third Party Vendor Reporting.

Could you please help me understand what skill-sets are essential for this role.

Abhijit Patro said...

Hello,

The role would mostly include analysing various Reports and how those reports can be generated.

You might have to prepare detailed analysis document on Reports, such as what all fields a report will have, selection parameters, creation of sample report, specifying Database Table Names and high level joins, etc.

It would be nice if you can brush up your Database skills...
